Mataranka Tours

Mataranka is a small town but is well endowed with facilities and attractions for the visitor, and accommodation, food and fuel supplies are readily available. Locals are friendly and the town is a good base for exploring the region. Tours are best undertaken as self-drive tours to one or more of the many attractions in the area.

Territory Manor

See large Barramundi fish being hand fed at the Territory Manor from 9.30am and 1.00pm daily.

Bitter Springs

Tropical spring fed thermal pool just 2km from Mataranka. A short walk from the car park amongst palms and tropical woodlands will lead you to the main swimming area.

Stockyard Gallery

Gallery located in Mataranka and provides information for travellers on the surrounding area. It inludes a shady tea garden, and local arts and souvenirs are on display.

Never Never Museum

Museum located behind the Council Chambers in the centre of Mataranka. The museum displays information on the North Australian Railway, Overland Telegraph line construction, Aboriginal history and World War II.

Elsey National Park

Located 10km south of Mataranka. Provides opportunities for camping, bushwalking, canoeing, fishing, swimming, and picnicking. Attractions include the Thermal Pool, Mataranka Falls, Stevies Waterhole and the 4km Botanic walk.

Mataranka Thermal Pool

A short walk from Mataranka Homestead takes you to the Mataranka Thermal Pool, a thermal pool surrounded by palms which maintains a constant temperature of 34 degrees Centigrade and flows from Rainbow Springs at an incredible 30.5 million litres daily. Surrounding the pool is a natural breeding ground for the Little Red Flying Fox. Traditionally the breeding season is in the Wet but often extends into the dry.

Elsey Homestead

The Elsey Homestead Replica is located at the Mataranka Homestead Tourist Resort. It is a replica of the original homestead, and was constructed from hand hewn cypress pine for the film ‘We Of The Never Never’. This film is shown at the homestead daily, along with other historical information and artifacts.
