DarwinDarwin Facts and FiguresDarwin is the capital of the Northern Territory of Australia, and is Australia's only tropical capital city. It has a population of around 80,000, with approximately 20,000 more in the city of Palmerston and the surrounding rural area, giving the Darwin region a total population of around 100,000. Around half of the Northern Territory's population live within a 40 kms radius of Darwin and, like the city itself, are on average younger than the rest of Australia. Darwin is noted for its relaxed lifestyle, diversity of cultures, spectacular monsoonal storms, and a rich variety of natural attractions. Darwin is in close proximity to South East Asia, and is closer to cities such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta than many Australian cities. Darwin is well-influenced by its northern neighbours and by the more than fifty different cultures that live harmoniously there.
